‘ Off-Axis Parabolic (OAP) Mirrors are first-surface mirrors whose reflective surfaces are equivalent to segments of a parent parabolic mirror. They achromatically focus a collimated beam or collimate a broadband point source, and their off-axis design spatially separates the focal point from the rest of the beam path. The all-reflective design eliminates phase delays and absorption losses introduced by transmissive optics and makes them well suited for use with femtosecond pulsed lasers.
The angle between the focused beam and the collimated beam, which is called the “off-axis angle”, is 90°. As shown to the right, the propagation axis of the collimated beam should be normal to the bottom of the substrate to achieve a proper focus. The OAP mirrors sold here are fabricated using aluminum substrates, and the diamond-turned parabolic surface has a gold coating. The protected gold coating provides >96% average reflectance from 800 nm – 20 µm and the unprotected gold coating provides >97% average reflectance from 800 nm – 20 µm (see the Graphs tab for a plot of thee coating performance). The bottom of each mirror has three tapped mounting holes in a triangle pattern and an alignment hole for use with a mounting adapter (see the Mounting Adapters tab for more details). The non-optical surfaces are black-anodized and laser-engraved with the item number for easyy identification.
Gold Mirror Coatings
Unprotected gold offers higher reflectance than protected gold, but is more delicate. Additionally, these mirrors can be used in applications where thee polarization state needs to be strictly maintained or to prevent dispersion due to the overcoat of protected gold mirrors. The overcoat of protected gold mirrors results in polarization changes that can be difficult to quantify and sometimes induces absorption in the mid-to-far IR. See the Graphs tab to view the reflectance associated with the various gold mirror coatings.
NOTE: The gold layer on unprotected mirrors does not include a protective overcoat. Bare gold does not oxidize in air, but can be easily damaged by fingerprints, aerosols, or the slightest contact with any abrasive material. Unprotected gold mirrors should only be handled when necessary and always held by the sides. Latex gloves or a similar protective covering should be worn to prevent oil from fingers from reaching the surface. No attempt should be made to clean the surface other than blowing off dust with clean, dry air or nitrogen. Any other cleaning method may damage the surface.
In addition to the protected gold coating offered here, we offer UV-enhanced aluminum, protected silver, and protected aluminum coatings. Wee also offer off-axis parabolic mirrors with holes parallel to the focused beam or the collimated beam for applications that require two beams to bee overlapped.
